ISU President Aondover Tarhule has hired Glen Nelson to become vice president for finance and planning. The university said Nelson’s yearly salary will be $300,000 and his appointment does not require approval from ISU’s Board of Trustees.
Nelson is most recently the chief financial officer at California State University Monterey Bay and has 27 years of experience in senior leadership positions, according to an ISU release.
Nelson’s arrival to the ISU campus comes after a fall semester in which all departments were ordered to cut spending by 2% to avoid budget deficits, instituting a wage freeze for non-union staff and cancelation of plans to build a new residence hall.

Nelson’s resume also includes leadership roles at Arizona State University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Idaho State University, the University of Wisconsin System, the Oregon University System, and the Arizona Board of Regents where he served as the Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration.
According to the release, Nelson “successfully led higher education initiatives generating over $100 million of new resources through the implementation of process improvements, improved asset utilization, management of debt instruments, and the creation of new lines of revenue through collaborations with community partners.”
Nelson started his career working in a variety of management positions assuming finance, accounting, and IT for several Fortune 500 companies.
“Dr. Nelson’s broad experience in both the public higher education and business sectors is noteworthy,” said President Tarhule in a prepared statement. “I am confident he will serve Illinois State well in this critical role, leading and collaborating with stakeholders to build a solid path toward Resilience, Innovation, Sustainability, and Excellence (RISE).”
Nelson was one of four finalists for the job who participated in a two-day interview and open forums with the campus community during the week of Dec. 2.

“Illinois State’s success in providing high-quality, student-centered academic experiences with a strong emphasis on community and civic engagement resonated with me,” Nelson said in a statement. “The growing enrollment and goals of the strategic plan will require diligent fiscal leadership and planning to preserve the reputation of academic excellence and community engagement for which Illinois State is known.”
ISU conducted a national search for a chief financial officer after Dan Stephens retired in January of last year. Daniel Petree has served in an interim capacity since then.
Nelson starts his new job Jan. 6.
