Major League Baseball promotes Ed Weber to Chief Financial Officer

Major League Baseball today announced that Ed Weber has been promoted to serve as the league’s Chief Financial Officer. Weber, who previously served as Executive Vice President and Deputy CFO, will oversee all aspects of MLB’s financial reporting, budgeting, treasury and tax functions, insurance and risk management, and issues related to Club finance and economics. Weber succeeds Bob Starkey, who will remain with MLB as a Senior Advisor to Commissioner of Baseball Robert D. Manfred, Jr.

Commissioner Manfred said: “Ed Weber has done outstanding work for our Central Office, the 30 Clubs and partners of our game for nearly two decades. I look forward to Ed’s expanded role with our executive leadership group and his continued impact on all branches of MLB’s operations.

Weber began his baseball career in 2006, when he became Senior Vice President and CFO of MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM). In that capacity, he was responsible for the interactive media company’s strategic and financial planning, financial reporting and treasury functions. Prior to joining MLBAM, the CPA was Vice President, Controller and Chief Accounting Officer of Sirius Satellite Radio.

Weber received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the Pennsylvania State University in 1992, graduating with honors, and serves as a member of the external advisory board for Penn State’s Schreyer Honors College, which he attended. He has served on the marketing board of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.

Starkey, who served as the league’s CFO since 2015, began to advise MLB on industry economic matters, such as its debt-service rule, revenue sharing system and other aspects of collective bargaining, in 1991. Starkey has consulted with various professional sports franchises and has worked on several new stadium projects, including all aspects of the development of Target Field in his hometown of Minneapolis.

Weber and his wife have two daughters and reside in New Jersey.
