The Wellfleet Selectboard has agreed to advertise for a finance director, moving toward a recommendation by state regulators that the town needs someone in that position.
The unanimous vote on Dec. 17 came after Town Administrator Tom Guerino assured the board that the position was not a newly created one but part of a reorganization that will eventually gather several departments into one finance department.
“An existing person can apply for it,” Guerino said.

Advertising for a finance director comes after Guerino was hired as town administrator in February. He is the latest in a series of town administrators in Wellfleet.
In 2023 the state Department of Revenue recommended that Wellfleet make a number of management changes, including hiring a finance director to oversee all financial operations. The report recommended combining the treasurer and collector positions, instituting regular financial reporting, training for staff and some town boards and the development of a financial plan.
A combined finance department in Wellfleet
Guerino said paying $150,000 for a finance director for a town with less than 4,000 year-round residents doesn’t make sense without reorganizing. He suggested the treasurer, collector, accountant and possibly assessing and human resources departments could eventually be reorganized and combined into one finance department.
The finance director job would be a combination job to start. It might be a finance director/treasurer or finance director/accountant, he said. Staff currently holding town finance positions would be able to apply for the position. The position would eventually become full-time.
Board member Ryan Curley said he was fine with moving forward with the plan even though the state Department of Revenue advised against combining the finance director position with any other position. This move is a start, he said. But he asked that any job description include a requirement that regular financial reports are made to the Selectboard and the Finance Committee.

Board Vice Chair Michael DeVasto supported the position but insisted there be cross-training for redundancy and data entry support for a director.
“We can do it for three to four years and do a reassessment,” Guerino said.
The discussion came after the board approved a job reorganization for an administrative assistant position for the property the town recently purchased, known as the Gestalt Center. The administrative position would provide support for all departments moving to the center. Voters at a June special town meeting approved such a reorganization.
